I had my last band concert of 9th grade year yesterday. It went okay. I really have grown to like band a lot this year.
I started band in the 6th grade. I was the only french horn in my class. It was hard because I had no one I could copy or cheat off. The teacher was a Clarinet player and didn't really know the brass as much as woodwinds. So I had to learn most of it on my own. He was kinda mean and grumpy but I still liked him.
7th grade band I got a new teacher. She was my favorite teacher in middle school. She was a brass player but only a trombone player. I once again was the only french horn player and since the only 8th grade french horn player from last year was gone, I was now the only french horn player in the school. :(
8th grade year: we played new exciting pieces that were fun to play. I loved playing in that band even though most of them quit after that year, and half of them were there just for their art credit, it didn't matter. I loved the music and the atmosphere of the band room.
9th grade band is SO fun. I love my class. I feel like I have learned so much from this year and have improved a ton. I am in an all brass class with a brass player teacher. He is the coolest teacher. He is my favorite teacher at my schools. He knows so much about music, and playing. He's really smart. I feel like I have learned a lot from him and I hope I get him next year. The music we played this year was REALLY good. During concert weeks, we meet up with the woodwinds and play after school so we can work out the parts and pull it all together. There are twenty flutes, six oboes, five clarinets, ten saxophones, and two baritone sax'. Thats a TON of woodwinds. They out play the brass. :( We have five Trombones, one baritone, one tuba, one french horn ( again I am the ONLY French horn in Varsity Band), and ten trumpets. Thats not a lot of brass. Adding the percussion and others I might have missed, we have 102 members of the varsity Band. the most they have ever had in the freshmen band class. Its hard to play with so many people because we want to all play together and sound good. But its a little disappointing because a lot of the members of this band are just here for their art credit and could care less about sounding good. Its sad for the members ( like me ) who actually care.
ANYWAYS, I love playing the french Horn. Its something I do best. I plan to take it all for years of high school and maybe beyond that. Hopefully I'll get into a higher band so I can finally play with some other French horn players. Maybe someday :)
